z transform - Squared magnitude of System Function H(z)


If:


$$ |\alpha|^2 = \alpha \alpha^* $$


Then, why does:


$$ |H(z)|^2 = H(z) H(z^{-1}) $$


instead of:


$$ |H(z)|^2 = H(z) H^*(z) $$
